Celtic was formed in 1978 as a holding company and a subsidiary company as a broker, insurance and reinsurance company for group life and health coverage.  The company has always had their corporate headquarters and operation in Chicago.  In 1980, Celtic Group, Inc. acquired an insurance company that had been operating in 49 states.  This company had been in operations since 1949. 

In 1986, Celtic introduced the Individual Health division to research, develop, and market products in the individual health insurance marketplace.  In 1999, Celtic's eBusiness department was formed to enhance the company's presence on the internet.  This new department allowed agents and consumers to purchase coverage online.  From that point on, the company officially changed it name to Celtic Insurance Company to reflect the company's focus on individual health insurance products.

In 2007, Celtic's redesigned it's web site to provide customers easier access to information, products and services as well as a streamlined quoting and application process.

In 2008, Celtic Group, Inc. was acquired by St. Louis-based Centene Corporation, a NYSE publicly traded company (CNC - ticker symbol).  The merger will help for potential growth for both companies by positioning both companies to have a full range of solutions for the rising number of uninsured Americans and providing market driven healthcare solutions.
