History of CIGNA Health Insurance

CIGNA family tree line goes as far back as 1792 to a company known as the Insurance Company of North America (INA).  INA is the United States first marine insurance company, which issued policies that insured the hull and cargo of the ship for voyages from Philadelphia to London or Northern Ireland.  In 1849, INA moves into California to provide coverage for gold, during the gold rush. 

In 1906, the tragic San Francisco earthquake leaves nearly five square miles of ruins.  INA and subsidiaries pledge to pay losses in full.  In 1982, CIGNA is chosen as the new name.  At this time, CIGNA provides health, dental and life employee health insurance plans.  In 1989, CIGNA International Financial Services is formed to provide health and life insurance internationally.  To better serve employee benefits, CIGNA acquires EQUICOR, the nation's sixth-largest provider of employee benefits.

In 1993, CIGNA adopts the new "Tree of Life" corporate symbol, which we see today.  Throughout the 1990s, CIGNA expanded its operations globally as well as growing it's provider and member base throughout the United States.

Today, CIGNA has evolved to one of the largest health insurance companies and is currently headquartered in Philadelphia, PA.
