History of Blue Shield of California Health Insurance

Blue Shield was originally founded in 1938 as the California Physicians' Service (CPS) on December 18 by the California Medical Association House of Delegates with a vote of 114-12. 

By 1939, they began operations and in their first year, they had 20,000 Californians subscribe and 5,000 physicians join the pioneer prepaid healthcare service plan. In 1950, Blue Shield introduces the first catastrophic coverage in the nation.  By 1961, the company was able to grow and provide health insurance coverage to over 1 million subscribers.  In 1988, the company joins the health maintenance organization business by establishing Blue Shield HMO in Sacramento.

Today, Blue Shield of California has evolved to one of the largest health insurance companies and is currently headquartered in San Francisco.
